Recipe for Coconut Oil Body Scrub

A while back I purchased coconut oil to use on my body, but I couldn't figure out a good way to use it.  I didn't want to just dunk my hand in the jar and spread the oil on. I did some research and found several body scrub recipes which I thought would be an easy way to reap the benefits of the coconut oil. For my Springtime Scrub recipe below I used lemongrass essential oil because I wanted something invigorating and fresh - you can use whichever oil you would prefer.  I purchased all these items from my local health food store.

1/2 cup of organic sugar (organic sugar is more course than regular sugar)
1/2 cup of coconut oil
1/4 cup of any course salt (I used kosher salt)
6-8 drops of essential oils (I used lemon)
I heated my oil a little in microwave first (30 sec.) since it was in a solid state and then poured the oil over the salt and sugar mixture.
I added my essential oil a drop at a time.
I then poured everything into an empty container I had.

I found that using a little scoop of the scrub for each arm and leg really helped distribute just the right amount of coconut oil to my skin!

My Favorite Body Lotions

Clockwise from left to right:

Dail 7 Day Moisturizing Lotion in Himalayan Pink Minerals: Dial has a new lotion out there that I purchased and love!  It's a huge bottle (26.25 FL OZ) for only around $5.  I'm not sure about other types, but the Himalayan Pink Minerals scent is light with a touch of flower sweetness.  I really like how this lotion absorbs into my skin without that greasy or sticky feeling that some lotions leave. I can actually put this on my feet and walk around without fearing that I'm getting lotion all over the carpet.  Ahh, important things you know.

Hawaiian Tropic Sheer Touch Sunscreen:  I am freckly person so that means if I step into the sun I turn red.  This sunscreen helps prevent any sunburn and smells and feels great going on.  I've tried a lot of sunscreens in my day and this one absorbs nicely and doesn't leave you feeling greasy or like you have white clown makeup on.

Vaseline Total Moisture in Cocoa Radiant: I love this for the smell. It doesn't absorb as quickly as the Dial lotion, but I deal with it because I love the smell so much!

H2O Milk Body Lotion: Whenever I see these at TJMaxx I pick one up as I'm a huge fan of the Milk line.  The scent is beautiful, clean and subtle.  Next time you see this around, pick it up and take a whiff - it's great!

Vaseline Cocoa Radiant Vitalizing Body Gel Oil:  I wasn't so sure about this at first, but then I figured out the best way to use it.  You know when you first put on a skirt, dress or shorts after a long winter and your legs are pale as pale can be - well, take a small amount of this in your hands and spread sparingly on your legs.  You will be left with a beautiful sheen and glow and you won't feel like you are scaring small children away with your blinding skin.

Have you tried any of my favorite lotions? Comment below and let me know if you have any favorite lotions that you would recommend that I try out.

DIY: Re-Use Old Candle Jars

I love my 3-wick candles and wanted to find a way to be able to use the wonderful jars they come in.  I've seen online the technique of freezing the old jar and then using a knife to break up the cold wax.  I don't know about you, but I don't do so well with knives and glass jars.  So I thought about melting the wax instead and popping out the leftovers.  I boiled up a pot of water, poured the hot water into my old candle jar and watched as the wax melted and floated to the top.  Of course George was there along the way making sure I didn't make too much of a mess.  Once the water had cooled and the wax had hardened at the top, I popped out the wax disk and cleaned out any remaining wax residue - easy!

Lemon Pound Cake candle all used up...

Pour in the boiling water and watch as the melted wax starts floating to the top.  That's George there overseeing the project.

Be sure to scoop out the wicks soon after you pour in the boiling water.

Let the water cool and the wax harden before popping out the wax disk.

Pour out the water once you remove the wax. Clean up any remaining residue with rubbing alcohol.  I would suggest not pouring the water down the drain - I dumped it outside as I didn't want to clog up my drains with any remaining wax.

There are endless possibilities of how you can use these jars!

Empties: Products I have used up - Vol. 1

Before you think I have a screw loose for keeping my trash and sharing it with you - think about how insightful it can be to check out products that people are actually using on a regular basis.  What better way to know what a face soap, shampoo, or makeup item is like then to see exactly what I have used to the end and what I thought about it.

Yup, I keep my empties...
From left to right: John Frieda Sheer Blonde Highlight Activating Shampoo and Conditioner, John Frieda Frizz-Ease Shampoo and Conditioner, John Frieda Sheer Blonde Go Blonder Shampoo and Conditioner.

The Sheer Blonder line was just ok for me - I didn't notice any real difference with my blonde hair getting lighter.  Towards the end of it's life I noticed my hair getting drier and drier and felt sort of straw like after blow drying.  The Frizz-Ease was a welcome change and made my hair softer after the first use.  After many uses though I noticed my hair getting oily and needed a clarifying shampoo at times to get rid of build-up.

Left to right: Clean & Clear Morning Burst Skin Brightening Facial Cleanser and Biore Combination Skin Balancing Cleanser

I love the Morning Burst and have used it everyday for years - it doesn't break me out and is really refreshing in the shower.  I thought I would shake things up a bit and try out the Biore line. I won't repurchase this as it broke me out and dried out my skin.

Center: Dove Go Fresh Cool Moisture Beauty Bar, Left to Right: Secret Cocoa Butter Kiss Deodorant, Suave Advanced Therapy lotion, and St. Ives Apricot Scrub

I switch back and forth between liquid body soaps and this here bar of soap.  I actually prefer the bar of soap because of it's ease, the scent, and it doesn't dry out my skin.  I go through these a lot and will repurchase. The deodorant is also my tried and true - I love the scent and do not deviate.  Don't buy the Suave lotion. Period. The St. Ives Apricot Scrub works wonders on removing dry skin and I really like using it on my face (lightly!). Some people just use it on their body because of how intense the exfoliant is, but I have sensitive skin and I use it on my face.

Target Up and Up Makeup Removing Cleansing Towelettes (Compare to Ponds Clean Sweep type)

I use these every night - this brand usually, and I love it!  I am trying out the actual Ponds brand now and really like these as well.  Because of the price, the scent and how well it takes off my makeup, I will continue to repurchase these.

Top: Mario Badescu Drying Mask - Bottom: Blue Copper 5 Firming Elasticity Repair

The drying mask was a sample that I enjoyed.  I don't think it's worth the price though and will not purchase.  It's like any other clay mask that dries out your skin - there are cheaper versions that I can use.  The Blue Copper 5 item was from Birchbox. It didn't firm anything or make anything more elastic.

Left to right: TRESemme Tres Two Hairspray and Big Sexy Hairspray

I've used a bottle of hairspray or two in my day and the best and only brand that I buy is the TRESemme Tres Two Spray.  My hair moves after using this.  The Big Sexy Hairspray made my hair feel like a helmet - a big ol' helmet of hard hair.

Le me know if you have tried out any of these products and what you thought about them in the comments below!

Under Construction: Office/Craft Room

I've been working on putting my office/craft room in order for a week now and I am happy to say it's almost complete!  I moved into the new space a few months ago and just kind of let things stay where I put them when we moved in.  I was searching high and far for things and thought I would be kind to myself and organize all my craft and art supplies in a way that makes more sense then sticking my watercolors in with my hot glue gun.  Check out a mid-organizing picture below.  I will post new pictures soon to show you the final results!

My trusty assistant George is hanging out in the middle of the mess.

Elum Stationary Desk Sets

Aren't these just desk sets just beautiful!  The folks over at Elum Designs know their stationary, colors, and letterpress design.  When I was a little girl I received a little stationary boxed set filled with paper, envelopes, cards and a pen.  Each night I would diligently sit and write letters to anyone until the contents were gone.  Seeing this desk set from Elum brings back those memories and makes me want a new "grown up" version of my very own.
